Precision Interface Electronics HON98-AUX Connect a portable music player, satellite radio tuner, or DVD player to your factory Honda receiver! Review

During installation, you will need to make a choice whether or not to attach the black wire. The instructions are vague, they say "install if you will be attaching a portable device".

What the should say is "connect the black wire when using a player that is powered by battery only"

Here's what you need to know:

(A) If you connect the black wire to ground, then you decide to plug your charger cable into the player, the audio from your mp3 player may be shorted out and you may hear nothing.

(B) If you do not connect the black wire, and you use a player without using the charger cable, you will likely hear some background noise (buzzing).

For me, I want the adapter to work properly whether I plug my mp3 player into the charging cable or not!

The method I chose is to attach the black wire from the adapter to one side of a mini toggle switch (SPST from Radio Shack) and connect the other side of the switch to a ground lug (or the radio black negative wire). Then mount the switch or have it dangling behind the dash in a place you can access. Then change the switch as necessary depending on how you are using the mp3 player.

Unfortunately, they did not design the adapter to automatically deal with both situations. I originally connected the black wire and then had to tear down my dash to gain access later to add the switch so I could use my mp3 player with the 12VDC power cable.

The adapter needs one ground path for noise-free operation. When the mp3 player is connected to the power outlet, a ground path is established and the black wire is not needed, and in fact may short out the audio. When the mp3 player is not connected to power, the ground is floating (subject to noise) unless the black wire is connected.

Fairly straightforward installation, cheaper than buying a new stereo - burpen -
I bought this adapter as an alternative to spending what seemed like upwards of 0 on an aftermarket stereo unit with an audio input jack.

I read this writeup beforehand: [...] It has some photos and helped me a good bit with the installation. Also linked there is a PDF ([...]) detailing how to install a stereo in a Honda Civic. The first few steps are the same ones you have to take to install the HON98-AUX.

I have a 2005 Civic EX, and like the guy that made the guide I linked, I didn't go beyond the step in which you remove the panel with the cigarette lighter socket in it. After I took that panel out, I reached up behind the stereo, found the CD changer socket, and eventually got the plug from the HON98-AUX into it. It's some very tight quarters in there, but if you are patient and don't have huge hands, you can probably do the same thing I did.

Taking a tip from some other reviews I read, I also installed a ground switch in an empty console button cover. There is a place to ground it immediately behind the cigarette lighter socket, so it was fairly easy to wire up. However, I can't really tell the difference between when I have the ground on or off, regardless of whether I'm charging my iPod from the cigarette lighter adapter. I do hear some very faint interference from the car itself when nothing's playing, but it's not enough for me to care about.

Best possible sound quality for MP3 player in your car - donny random -
I am very happy with the results of installing this converter. It was quick and easy to install. There are many good video tutorials on youtube on how to get access to the back of the radio. The sound quality was a huge improvement over a wireless FM car transmitter for the MP3 player. And you don't have something to plug into the cigarette lighter. If you want to play your MP3 player in your older Honda, this is the best solution.

works well - Danny Yao -
got the product really fast. I had a hard time taking my car apart, but the actual installation of the device was very simple. I used a bunch of zip ties to secure it to the bracket. It's been over 6 months, still works like a charm. very clear sound.
